MEKONG BLUSH Oud & Frangipani natural perfume

My newest perfume creation! Unabashedly feminine and flirtatious Mekong Blush showcases only two premium ingredients from The Heart of Vietnam, both courtesy of my distillation mentor Tony Bolton at Aroma Sublime. Tony's Famous Frangipani oil combined with a very light and fruity Vietnam agarwood oil from the same region right on the Mekong River where Aroma Sublime is headquartered. This is a reflection of that special terroir and my wonderful time there with Tony and Tha.

100% natural perfumes are delicate process and here I have tried to highlight the perfection and complexity of only two very expensive ingredients that represent a kind of aromatic quintessence and wholeness each on their own.

The bottle is also filled with rose quartz making this not only a perfume but a gem elixir.

A few notes on these wonderful oils:

YUZU is Japan's quintessential citrus specialty fruit used as you would a lemon but with a distinctive lemon- tangerine flavor and aroma. There are two individual distillations of Yuzu, the Gold and the Zen One Premium. Both are excellent but the Zen One Premium is from a very old tree and has an unusual deep warm and resinous aroma reminiscent of blood orange.

SUDACHI is a small sour citrus fruit indigenous to Japan with a beautiful bright clear lemon aroma reminiscent of the best Italian tree-ripened lemons.

KABOSU is a regional Citrus specialty used like lime but with a prominent grapefruit aroma. The essential oil is an unexpected Delight in that it has a background scent and flavour of ripe pears! SHOP NOW

Japan Inspired Perfume Set with local artisanal essential oils

I have been crafting essential oils in the Japanese countryside all through 2020 with local raw materials.

Now I have meticulously blended my oils to produce two perfumes inspired by my time here in Southern Japan.

HIJI FOREST WALK and BEPPU SPICE WALK (10 ml each in a bamboo atomizer spray bottle)

HIJI FOREST WALK The small Japanese town of Hiji is actually where I have been living for the past year and distilling essential oils from local organic and wildcrafted ingredients. This scent is like a stroll through Hiji in the summertime with its incredible variety of flowers, citrus trees, and lush cedar and cypress surroundings. Top notes of yuzu citrus and orange blossom and a breezy woodsy heart and base of Japanese mountainside forest; sugi, hinoki, laurel, lichen and moss, and just a hint of good sandalwood.

BEPPU SPICE WALK Beppu is the nearest city and popular tourist town. Although it is small, Beppu is bustling with creativity, youthful vigour, and remarkable ethnic diversity as a result of an international university and its reputation as a party and hot spring mecca. The perfume inspired by Beppu is foundationally a smooth light and breezy blend of very Japanese scents but with a few spicy surprises. Most notably the aroma of cardamom and a Japanese citrus medley pops at the top, and then through the day will open up into a Japanese summer breeze of forest and field.

Yakusugi, the 1000-year-old essential oil!

The first trickle of oil from the rare and no longer harvested Yakushima Sugi, Wood from Japanese red cedar trees that are 1000 years old or more from the forest island of Yakushima off the southern coast of Japan, that inspired the princess Mononoke anime film. Some of these trees have been recorded at up to 7000 years old! Fortunately, they are now protected from any type of cutting or harvesting. That means there is an ever-dwindling supply of this gorgeous wood available, and there will be no more to come in our lifetime. Prices keep rising and items tend to increase in value over time. I feel very lucky to have access to this rare and valuable raw material!

The oil so far has a beautiful colour, as you can see from the photo, and has a very unusual opalescent sheen that is most visible in the meniscus.

I’m always struck by how older trees produce their own unique aromatic complexity and almost express an individual personality in their scent composition. Thousand-year plus Yakusigi seems to be no exception! It features a stunning complexity a world apart from regular young Japanese red cedar essential oil. The scent does feature classic cedar notes, but not heavy, resinous, sharp or camphorous at all. Instead, it presents a broad wood-aroma spectrum that is not obviously cedar, but something completely different. It overlaps slightly into some more sweet/floral oud notes and the edges of aged sandalwood top notes.
In addition, I notice a sunny medley of dried wildflowers, the scents of chalk and clay, lichen and moss…
